Typographic Workbook

The type workbook is a series of investigations you will be conducting based on terms or rules. This is a quick project, we will be have crits and workdays but you will need to do the majority of the work outside of class. The workbook should hold together as one document (like your previous process books). There are different types of information you will be "displaying". All work should be done in InDesign. We will use masterpages and style sheets. You all will be using LuLu to produce the final book. Hardbound black and white or color. (color will cost more so it is completely optional GRAY IS NOT a color).

As design professionals it will be apparent if you know the rules or if you don’t. When a professional looks at your type, they can immediately tell if you "know" type. Getting and keeping the job you want requires that you know and master these rules/terms. The upper-level classes focus on the macro of typography, the big idea... this workbook focuses on the micro (all the typographic details) it is expected that you know this information and it will not be covered again.

This book is something you will take with your to your future classes and future jobs. You are creating your own resource. Take care and pay attention to every detail. This project in its self (as boring) as many of you may think it is could get you a job/internship.

Process Book

A process book is a record of your work and your thinking. This a designed piece. The final product should be ready for printing (whenever you choose to). A good process book can be an excellent supplement for interviews and, especially, review.

Please include:

-- concept statement (MAKE SURE your concept matches your final design)

-- Associated word list: create word list, at least 50 descriptive words.
-- Define 10 words from your list: 10 key words from your list
-- Tone: serious, humorous, informative, how-to, a manual, journal, fiction, non-fiction?
-- Audience Profile (written as a narrative about the person)
-- All your rough concept statements and refinements...
-- Define: series and sequence
-- All research (ie: sign, index, symbol, examples of bookcovers that you think are "good" (good means they grabbed your attention for some reason). Please include the designer (if possible). Also include any writings / thoughts you created.

-- Sketchbook Pages do not have to be well-designed; grab your sketchbook, place it face down on the scanner, scan. Writings, thoughts, any relevant will be appreciated.

In order to reinvigorate a classic book series, my bookcover 
        designs aim to revive the original Brothers Grimm folk tales in their

        12 x 9 inches in spread form.

Creating a Complete Series of Bookjackets

Take your most successful one (or two) directions from Wednesday class and continue to refine / improve. Refer to your concept statement for direction and meaning. Think about hierarchy and entry points for your viewer. Study your inspiration and make your own solutions look complete—all the necessary information should be incorporated into your design.

So far we have been working on the cover of the book only, which will measure 6x9 inches (portrait). As you begin to have a more complete set of covers, begin to move your solutions to the full bookjacket format. (Click to enlarge.)

Explore another five covers for each of your refined directions from Wednesday, then move your most successful (or your favorite) into the full bookjacket format. Ideally, I would like to see all of your cover sketches and one complete series of bookjackets, printed full size (can be black and white but color would be best).

Evaluate the imagery you brought in for Monday's class and identify the visual strategies you see in them. Then find great 3 bookcover examples for each. For instance:

Sourcing classic paintings + modern type = contemporary, fresh

Combining two very different images to illustrate a concept

After you have identified two to three of the visual strategies in your imagery and concept, please create 5-10 computer sketches for each direction. These sketches should be much more refined at this point—choose appropriate typefaces and make them look GOOD. Include all relevant information, such as Title, Author, any need Subtext (see example above), Publisher—whatever makes this look legitimate and professional.

Please have these printed for class, along with your chosen concept statement and whichever bookcovers you used for inspiration.

Write Audience Persona: Write one audience profile (one person). Who would buy your book? What section of the book store is your book located? What is their age, sex, education, what are their interests? Please read through the examples before you begin.

Write Concept statement: Try several you will not get it the first time. Please attempt it at least 3 times (I want to see all three.) Remember, this can be a quote, or definition, or reflect the tone of your books.

Type studies: the solutions are type only. Look at all your options, set one title and author in all caps and again in upper/lower case. reg, bold, italic *type studies. Try at least 15 fonts. PLUS if you want to look at fonts off the font list that is fine. They do not count towards your 15. (you may use any off the server or off dafont.com or... The entire font family can be used {italic, bold, extended...}. Identify 3 font combinations that you fell represent the mood/tone/feeling of your series.

Color palette: what colors will work to emotively represent your series? Develop a color palette for the series of book covers.

Visuals: images (icons, illustrations, photos), color palette, patterns. Images can be found in design annuals, books or your own (no low res online images allowed; if it is not high quality you can't use it). At least 20 different visuals (think sign and index). Avoid the cliche. Follow your concept.

You can start combining color and visuals with your type studies but ONLY after you have made your type studies.

Have this work printed and ready to show / talk about in class. Print out your concept statement on it's own piece of paper — subsequent work on other sheets.

Style Reference: Looking through online book cover examples (below), find at least 4 examples of each. Look for type only and type and image examples. All examples should be ones that you think fit the category and themes you find interesting. Don't just pick. Be considerate. There isn't really a wrong answer.

How can we see how a word is said. How can we see how you think it should be said, stressed, pauses.... and what is the mood, tone, feeling: somber, happy, call to action, quite, stress, sadness, angry, calm, anxiety, ... Need some inspiration look at Dada, Futurism, Concrete Poetry...

1) Learn how to work with a null object. Parenting your camera to a null object will make camera movements exponentially easier.

2) Figure out all the idiosyncrasies of masks. My project would be nothing without them. Especially pay attention to :

a. Whether the mask is set to "Add" or "Subtract"
b. Changing mask position with nodes - Shift+Click on one of the anchor points on a mask. This allows you to alter the mask shape as you move keyframe to keyframe, creating the illusion of something growing or receding.
c. Working with mask feathering is tricky but can add a great illusion of depth if used correctly.

1. When working with sound, be sure to match up your keyframes with your Audio waveform, not with what you hear. It will enable you to visualize what the sound is doing and where sound actually starts versus when you think it starts.

2. Try and discover all of the quirky little things after effects has to offer, be they different effects or shortcuts on your keyboard.
3. Use the pre-compose feature. It helps keep your main composition organized and will save time in the long run.

4. Always think of your composition as a 3D world, where you can go back, forth, turn around, look up, down, etc. It will be easier to use cameras/null objets when you think in a 3D state of mind.

Don't be afraid to get into your video and start editing. Unlike flash, you do not have to start over with every edit, you can simply move your layers around.

_ avoid a symmetric spread, think as spreads not pages.

Tips
_ avoid all the text being "high" on the page - works better lower on the page
_ have elements align on the same baseline
_ avoid white more white space "inside" the page. have your white space outside of the elements
_ do not crowd the page
_ do not have too little on the page
_ take your time be neat
_ explore some layouts conservative/traditional, other really push scale, tension, overlap,...

FINAL CHECKPOINTS_ clear hierarchy: headlines, subheads, intro text, body copy and callouts
_ used leading grid correctly (margins, alleys. modules)
_ everything locked to the baseline grid
_ most of the body text is 9/12 (or 8.5/12, or 8/12 depending on font)

The first project next semester (type 2) you will be redesigning a bookcover. Based on feedback last semester the students said they would have liked the break to identify the book(s). You must have read the book to be able to redesign the cover. DO not pick something FAMOUS or well know, something that is well designed or designed a over and over. Must be a work of FICTION. Come to class on the the first day with at least 3 choices and you need to have the book(s) with you and have READ THEM. Do not design something that you haven't read. Feel free to run any books by me before the first day.

If you are having trouble with ideas you need to go back to your research, back to your concept. Reread the foundations reading and relook at all the bookcover reference material you have. As a designer you will always be asked to come up with lot and lots of ideas. You can do it.

Pressing Letters is an effort to catalog and promote creativity in our expanding letterpress community. Studios and individuals are invited to submit letterpress work, references, links or anything else that would be beneficial to others.

We (design department) has a great letterpress class, and once you learn how to do it you can always use the lab. Class is Friday mornings, counts as an design elective. If you are looking for a summer class there will also be a letterpress/bookarts class offered.

How can you show time? Is it linear or does it move both horizontally and vertically... Does time intersect, or loop, overlap? Did each event cause the next one? a reaction, an advancement? What are important dates/milestones? How do they look different than the other dates. How do you show time in using scale, color, foreground background shifts...

then think of words that express harsh
and words that express nature

so for me i am fine if your concept is a hybrid word, definitions and a list.

remember when we are looking at your designs we will see your concept and use your concept do determine if your covers are successful.

Learn to face your worst fears, and make it out alive. You never know when you might find yourself in the epicenter of a massive explosion, being sucked under waves in icy waters, inhaling the sweaty breath of a t-rex, or plummeting down a deafening waterfall in a capsized canoe. It's best to be prepared for any disaster that might befall. The more obscure, the better. No threat is too minor to be addressed. You can think quickly on your toes in the midst of even the most terrifying calamity. Surging adrenaline propells you to take charge and escape. When everyone else is screaming in panic, you’re cool and composed in the face of danger. You won't even consider joining the body count.

remember: concept is the big idea behind the series, captures the mood, tone, feeling of the series. you should read it and images come to mind. you should be able to give someone your concept statement and they would find just the right images for you...

When I say a bright summer's day what comes to mind? A time of innocence? Or days spent by the creek. or completely different: an island of dread and fury...

Typography 02: Journal

INSPIRE...The journal assignments are set up to get you looking, listening and experiencing design outside of class and outside of Kansas. As a blog it should inspire. Its contents; reflections, thoughts, questions, answers and “found stuff”. Each week has a different task {read, watch or listen}. After you have completed the task, post on your blog: a written summary of the the reading/ video/ or audio, a considered reflection/opinion, and answer any additional questions listed for that entry.

Your blog/journal should show your engagement to typography and graphic design. Besides the task you should be inspired by stuff around you and that stuff you find on the web. "Found stuff" means found examples of typography/design in the environment, signage, magazines, books, posters, “good” type, “bad” type, "ugly/beautiful" interesting fonts, handmade fonts, letterforms, packaging... Carry a camera and take photographs of type/design in your environment as well as find examples that you can copy, scan and upload into the blog.

The dates listed are the dates the journal is assigned. The journal will be checked/graded weekly. And it counts for 10% of your final grade. To get an “A” for the journal you must have completed every entry by the next class period, it must have visuals, all content (your comments etc.,) should be well written/complete and “considered”. Also to do above and beyond (to get an “A” ) you need to have consistently throughout the semester added other content you found interesting and inspiring to you. And commented frequently on your classmates blogs. Minimum effort will receive a C or lower. If you complete everything but not on time it will be considered below minimum effort.

After you completed each task, summarize it: information about the author and what did they say..., reflect upon it, what questions would you ask the author? what questions do you have about what they said... and answer any additional questions listed for that week. see journal for details

When you are not working on translations by hand at the table, work on the computer on a translation, cropping and type studies. try everything in class before you leave so that you know what to do over the weekend and get any questions that you have answered.

DSVC Photos

DSVC is slowly getting winners photos up for each of the categories. Check them out here.

Of particular note are the "Recast Dominoes" which won 3 awards total (Miscellaneous, Judges choice and a vendors scholarship if memory serves right) and the Pyrex packaging. The photos don't do justice to either of these pieces but it gives you an idea of what kind of work was there. We (KU) could easily be winning these awards. There's a lot of strong work coming out of our class and I would encourage any of you to submit work to the DSVC show and others like it.

When working with sound, be sure to match up your keyframes with your Audio waveform, not with what you hear. It will enable you to visualize what the sound is doing and where sound actually starts versus when you think it starts.
Try and discover all of the quirky little things after effects has to offer, be they different effects or shortcuts on your keyboard.
Use the pre-compose feature. It helps keep your main composition organized and will save time in the long run.
Always think of your composition as a 3D world, where you can go back, forth, turn around, look up, down, etc. It will be easier to use cameras/null objets when you think in a 3D state of mind.

1) Learn how to work with a null object. Parenting your camera to a null object will make camera movements exponentially easier.

2) Figure out all the idiosyncrasies of masks. My project would be nothing without them. Especially pay attention to :

a. Whether the mask is set to "Add" or "Subtract"
b. Changing mask position with nodes - Shift+Click on one of the anchor points on a mask. This allows you to alter the mask shape as you move keyframe to keyframe, creating the illusion of something growing or receding.
c. Working with mask feathering is tricky but can add a great illusion of depth if used correctly.

This spring break I went down to Cd. Juarez to visit my family and during my time in the city with my cousins I took pictures of additional found type.

I found it interesting how the majority of the type was hand painted while most of the type I see here in the U.S. is printed. Hmm...

Hallmark has great internships for the summer they are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. They get more than 400 applicants but out of that 400. It is a long shot for you all but you are welcomed to try and so DO IT. We did have sophomore last year get one. IT is free to apply, need a cover letter, resume, no printouts, just electronic.

From NOW until Monday please think of your poster as a poster, what is the essence of the speech? who is speaking, what is the date (and how can you show that), how can you express the speech into a POSTER. Stop thinking about how the poster is going to become motion. Choose 1, 2 or 3 words or a phrase and start there. Include the speech on the poster but it can be small or edited down to the essence 50 to 100 words. Start striping your poster to a clear idea. Do as many as you can for Monday. EXPLORE.

Right now they are not looking like a poster and they are looking similar. PLEASE consider: space, sCaLE, contrast.. Don't hold back BUT don't do things just becuase they are "cool", always have a reason and it has to go back to the meaning, emotion, feeling... of the speech.

Try for a poster that gives the viewer information in layers, when they are 20 feet away they should see be able to read something, at 10 feet something else, and 1 foot away to be able to read the rest.

I will be around part of the weekend if you want me to take a look. The examples below are just examples not all super great but hopefully they will get you thinking. Try not to be overly influenced by them.

I'm not sure how long they've been doing this (at least since 2000 judging by their archives) but AIGA often includes the typeface when listing credits for their selections for 365: Year in Design. It's a nice way to see a typeface or combination of typefaces in action.

2) find a video that you like
3) click on the playlist button below the video
4) create a playlist (you call add lots of videos to one playlist
5) go up to your account -> playlist, and go to a playlist
6) when you see all your videos in that playlist click on play all
7) in the upper right there is "embed" copy that text next to "embed"
8) go you your blog entry and past into text field.
